Most wedding functions really come alive after sunset — the sangeet, the baraat, the jaimal and the pheras. That makes lighting one of the most important parts of your decor. Good lighting can make a simple setup look magical; poor lighting can hide even the most expensive flowers. Here is how to get it right.
Think in layers
Lighting designers never rely on a single type of light. They combine three layers:
- Ambient light — the overall glow from fairy lights, chandeliers and canopy strings.
- Accent light — focus lights and uplighters that highlight the mandap, stage, trees and floral work.
- Task light — bright, even light where guests eat and walk, and where photos are taken.
When all three work together, the venue feels warm and inviting — and your photographer will thank you.
The entrance sets the first impression
Guests decide how grand a wedding feels within seconds of arriving. A glowing gate, a pathway lined with lanterns, or a canopy of hanging lights leading to the main area creates a sense of occasion straight away.
Warm white lights make skin tones, gold jewellery and marigolds look their best. Save coloured lighting for the dance floor.
Mandap and stage: light the faces, not just the flowers
It is easy to flood a stage with decorative lights and forget the couple. Make sure there is soft, even light on their faces during the jaimal and the pheras, and avoid harsh coloured lights pointed straight at the stage. Chandeliers and warm uplighting behind the couple add depth without casting shadows.
Roads and pathways
If your baraat travels along a road or lane, decorative road lighting keeps the procession visible, safe and beautiful on video. Inside the venue, light every path between parking, entrance, dining and washrooms so older guests can move around comfortably.
Power, backup and safety
This is the part no one sees but everyone depends on:
- Confirm power capacity with your venue and arrange generator backup.
- Keep cables covered, taped down and away from walkways.
- Use weatherproof fittings for any open-air setup.
- Keep a technician on-site through the event — our lighting team stays until the last function ends.
